With no other takers, I walked away with it at the starting price, although shipping costs to New York, via Tokyo, totaled considerably more than the <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>hammer price<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Hammer price<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The final cost of an item at auction, excluding tax and shipping.<\/span><\/span><\/span>.&nbsp; Necessary for accurate timekeeping, and to prevent wearing of parts.<\/span><\/span><\/span>, but that was to be its last, no doubt relegated to some dusty drawer by the eighties, where it lay in a 40-year slumber &#8211; from which it shall duly be reawoken this very day.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll spare you all the details of an uneventful <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>strip down<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Strip down<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Separate the watch into all its constituent parts.<\/span><\/span><\/span>, and get straight to the glory of the <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Part Art<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Part Art<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The laying out of all the components of a watch prior to rebuilding, The <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>crystal<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Crystal<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The clear glass on the front of a watch.<\/span><\/span><\/span> is made of Hardlex, <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Seiko<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Seiko<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>A Japanese manufacturer of watches.<\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8217;s branded strengthened glass &#8211; clearly not strengthened enough to survive the decades, as the original auction picture testifies, and with no feasible option of polishing, there is little choice but to seek a replacement. This is easily done for brushed stainless steel with some heavy-duty scouring pad.  In the way that blue scourer is used for delicate non-stick pans, and green for regular dishes, there is an extra heavy-duty purple variety, not often seen in stores but readily available online, that will cut through the surface of steel leaving a trim brushed finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>bracelet<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Bracelet<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Metal band\/strap to secure a watch around the wrist.<\/span><\/span><\/span> however, has alternating links of polished and brushed steel. The minute and hour hands can be re-positioned, and then the crown returned at the exact correct time so the watch resumes ticking.\r<br \/>\r<br \/>A standard feature on all but the most basic of watches.<\/span><\/span><\/span> so I was able to advance the hour without affecting the timing &#8211; there&#8217;s always a silver lining! <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Daily wear shows timings between  -0.4 to +1.6 seconds per day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Overnight on the nightstand, resting <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>dial<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Dial<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The visible face of the watch.<\/span><\/span><\/span> up, shows timings between -0.9 and +1.7 sec\/day &#8211; curiously a higher variance than when worn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall average for this week of wear was +0.6  s\/d, which I&#8217;m very pleased with for a timepiece of such humble caliber, and considerable vintage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some might say this is a lot of trouble to go to for quite a pedestrian watch &#8211; but such is the nature of obsession.
